Best friends April Brown and Sarah Sklash have put everything on the line to live the millennial dream of being their own bosses. Their goal is to run and grow a motel empire, by renovating old motor-inns and redefining the expectations of a roadside stay under the retro-chic umbrella of The June Motel.
Three years ago, they turned a dilapidated inn in the Great Lakes wine country into the rosé-fueled The June Motel. The ultra-Instagrammable rooms have been sold out ever since, went viral on social media, and have had glowing features in the likes of The New York Times and Vogue.
Now these BFF business partners are ready to do it all over again. This time everything is bigger: the motel, the renovation, and the risk. April and Sarah have sunk everything they have into this project. With their reputations on the line – and their personal homes and first motel securing the investment – they have no choice but to make their new project a success, and fast!
For this Motel Makeover, the duo is leaving their city lives behind in the midst of a harsh winter and moving on-site to their newly purchased property: the Knight’s Inn, a 1970s-era motel in the sleepy town of Sauble Beach. Once a summer hotspot for urban holiday goers, Sauble Beach has seen better days. But its proximity to some of the most picturesque destinations in the region make this opportunity a diamond in the rough. April and Sarah are seizing their chance to be the go-to spot for sunset seekers around the world who are drawn to the breathtaking seven-mile waterfront along Lake Huron, the fourth largest lake in the world.
Together with their young protégé and Project Manager, Courtney, these women are rolling up their sleeves and taking on a lot of the work themselves. They have just five months and a $600K budget to finish the massive project in time to throw a jam-packed pool party to launch the summer 2020 tourist season.
In order to make it happen, they have to Junify 24 outdated guest rooms; a use-at-your-own-risk outdoor pool; a restaurant that’s been abandoned for a decade; the entire property exterior and landscaping; a bare-bones A-Frame show home; and the residence, a three-bedroom apartment above the restaurant where they will live together throughout the renovation. With a knack for effortlessly stylish design at an affordable price tag, they share their signature Junify Tips along the way.
In a year unlike any other, everything that could go wrong, will go wrong. Are these burgeoning entrepreneurs getting in way over their heads, or are their motel empire dreams closer than they realized?
